Mercedes kept their cards close to their chest in winter testing while Ferrari and McLaren seemed most intent on going for quick lap times.

But on recent evidence the Silver Arrows will show their true potential straight out of the box in Melbourne.

Last year Lewis Hamilton topped the Australian Grand Prix first practice timesheets by half a second and in 2016 it was a similar story.

In 2015 the Briton was pipped to top spot by his teammate Nico Rosberg, but the pair were more than a second clear of the pack.

Hamilton is favourite to set the fastest Friday morning tour of Albert Park but it's hard to argue with that assessment and he is a backable price.

There is a mixed weather forecast for the weekend. Spectators will need their sunblock for practice day but umbrellas look set to be the order of the day for qualifying.

That could lead to some surprises in terms of grid order, but raceday is expected to be dry, albeit cloudy.

Recommendation
L Hamilton fastest in practice one
2pts 6-4 Hills
