A late rain storm completely changed the complexion of the Russian Grand Prix a fortnight ago, and more rain is expected for this week’s Turkish Grand Prix.
It shouldn’t be of the same intensity as at Sochi, though, and the first day of track action is expected to stay dry.
Lewis Hamilton reclaimed the lead of the drivers championship with his win in Russia, but the Istanbul circuit’s sweeping corners are expected to favour the Red Bull of his title rival Max Verstappen.
The Dutchman has won neither of the last two races – the joint-longest drought he has suffered all season – but is odds-on to win and reclaim the championship advantage on Sunday.
Having added a fresh engine to his pool in Russia (and started from the back as a consequence) Verstappen is the obvious bet to top the first practice.
But at much bigger odds it could be worth chancing Charles Leclerc to show the benefit of Ferrari’s upgraded power unit.
Leclerc was fourth-fastest in the opening session in Russia, Netherlands, Belgium and Britain.
His teammate Carlos Sainz will get his first taste of the new motor this weekend, but will start from the back of the grid as a result, as Leclerc did in Russia.
