Miami Grand Prix sprint race predictions

The F1 championship resumes in the Sunshine State of Florida this weekend after a two-week break and Oscar Piastri is on top of the standings after winning three of this season's five races.

There is the potential for plenty of movement in the standings as it's the second sprint-race weekend of the season, so any driver sweeping both races would collect 33 points.

Bookmakers have found it hard to separate the two McLaren drivers in the betting for any Miami market and Piastri and teammate Lando Norris are the 6-4 joint-favourites for both Sunday's Grand Prix and the sprint race on Saturday.

Sprint races have been dominated by Max Verstappen since their introduction in 2021 - the Red Bull star's 11 wins in the format put him nine ahead of anyone else.

Piastri is joint-second in the overall list thanks to his 2023 and 2024 wins in the Qatar sprints, while Norris had his first short-format success in Brazil last year. After Lewis Hamilton's win in China this season, Verstappen has not won any of the last three sprints, which is his longest drought since the concept was introduced.

Since sliding off the track in a late downpour in his home race in Australia, Piastri has not done much wrong this season, and he has kept a calmer head in recent rounds while Norris has been battling the car and making mistakes under pressure, highlighted by his qualifying crash in Saudi Arabia.

The British driver will have fond memories of Miami after it was the scene of his first grand prix win last year, although he was slightly fortunate on that occasion, benefiting from a cheap pit-stop under the safety car. Piastri had been closely matched with his teammate on his first visit to the track and was unlucky in the race when his car was damaged in a collision with Carlos Sainz for which the Ferrari driver was penalised.

The Australian is clearly more comfortable in the 2025 car than Norris at the moment and looks worth backing for a sprint-race success in Miami.

Verstappen has had a busy schedule this week as his partner is set to give birth to their first child and he was not at the track on Thursday. He won the first two races in Miami and was runner-up to Norris last year after winning the sprint, but his excellent win in Japan is looking like an outlier and he may lose too much time to the McLarens in the medium-speed corners at this circuit. Ferrari and Mercedes may have to fight it out for podium places at best.
