Miami Grand Prix predictions

History repeated itself in the sprint race in Miami on Saturday when Lando Norris experienced some good fortune with the timing of a safety-car period to win, as he had when gaining his first grand prix success in Florida last season.

The Sunshine State was hit by rain before and during the shorter race of the weekend and there is a threat of more stormy weather in the forecast for Sunday's Miami Grand Prix itself.

It was a day of mixed fortunes for McLaren, who claimed a one-two finish in the sprint. Oscar Piastri had looked the likely winner until he lost the lead due to having to slow for the safety car caused by Fernando Alonso's collision with Liam Lawson.

Their task was made easier by a pit-lane collision between Max Verstappen and pole-sitter Kimi Antonelli, who had lost the lead to Piastri at the first corner. The incident saw Verstappen handed a penalty and he finished out of the points in 17th place.

Piastri now leads the world championship by nine points from Norris, with Verstappen ten points further back in third, but the Red Bull star was back to his brilliant best in the qualifying session for the Grand Prix that followed.

McLaren again looked to have the strongest car and posted the fastest two times in Q2, but - not for the first time this season - Norris and Piastri both made critical errors in their final runs in Q3. Verstappen took pole by just 0.065 seconds from Norris, while Antonelli again impressed over a single lap and pipped Piastri for third.

There is the potential for more first-lap drama on Sunday, with old rivals Verstappen and Norris alongside each other on the front row and Antonelli next to Piastri, who he felt had forced him wide in the sprint start, so with the weather being a wildcard too, having a strong opinion on the main contenders is difficult.

The smart move could be to take Piastri each-way at a much larger price than either of the front-row starters. The McLaren should remain just the faster car despite Red Bull's impressive improvements through the weekend and they were clearly superior when intermediate tyres were used in Saturday's wet-dry race.

It is also worth backing Alex Albon to continue Williams' strong weekend with his second top-six finish of the season. Albon finished fifth on the road in the sprint but was demoted to 11th after being one of four drivers to pick up penalties.

He and teammate Carlos Sainz qualified seventh and sixth for the main race, ahead of both Ferraris on merit, and there was barely anything between the pair in all three qualifying sessions. Albon has been the more reliable driver so far this season and gets the nod.
