Emilia Romagna Grand Prix predictions

Qualifying for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix proved to be eventful but it has left a much less attractive set of markets for Sunday's race.

With the Red Bull of Yuki Tsunoda not able to set a time after a huge crash early in Q1 and then both Ferraris and Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes failing to reach the final qualifying session and starting in the second half of the grid, the number of likely challengers to pole-sitter Oscar Piastri are limited and as a consequence each-way betting is only two places.

Championship leader Piastri pipped Max Verstappen to pole despite meeting traffic in the final sector of his final run and the Aussie is a hot favourite at 1-2 with Hills and is as short as 2-5 to pick up his fourth successive win and his fifth in seven races this season.

Qualifying has been where McLaren have been most vulnerable this season as they have strong race pace at most tracks and their car's ability to limit tyre degradation should again stand them in good stead.

It was a familiar story for Lando Norris in the second McLaren as he failed to deliver on his final qualifying run, having mixed it with Piastri and Verstappen throughout the session and he is only fourth on the grid, behind the Mercedes of George Russell.

If he can avoid tangling with the aggressive Verstappen at the start, Piastri should have an opportunity to establish a clear lead at a track where passing is difficult.

A winning margin of over 10 seconds looks a value bet at 5-2. The Aussie won by 9.7 seconds in China and 15.5 seconds in Bahrain and he could be gone by the time his teammate can clear Russell and Verstappen.

Ferrari's disappointing day was exacerbated by the revival of Aston Martin, who took fifth and eighth on the grid in an upgraded car and Fernando Alonso, who has yet to score a point this season, is now odds-on for a top-six finish at 8-11.

Preference is to take the second Aston Martin of Lance Stroll to finish in the top ten.
