Canadian Grand Prix predictions

Oscar Piastri is the driver of the moment in Formula One after winning four of the last six races to move ten points clear at the top of the standings.

The cool-headed Australian is 8-13 to win the world title in only his third season at the top level and he is the 6-4 favourite to secure his sixth win of the season in Montreal on Sunday evening.

McLaren have won seven of the nine races this year after Piastri led home their third one-two finish of the season in Barcelona two weeks ago, and while Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari will all be hoping to be in the fight at the front, the battle for the race win should be between the top two in the championship again.

The clampdown on front-wing flexing at the Spanish Grand Prix certainly didn't seem to harm the British team compared to their rivals.

While Piastri has done a better job of maximising his car's potential so far this season, there's still very little between the two McLaren drivers in terms of pace and the gap between their odds looks too big at a circuit where the Aussie has raced only twice.

Lando Norris was clearly the lead McLaren in Canada last season, when he finished a close second to Max Verstappen after losing what looked a comfortable lead due to an ill-timed safety-car period. Piastri qualified one place behind Norris in fourth and finished only fifth. While he has made a major leap forward this season, it seems premature to give him a clear edge over Norris in the markets.

Nico Hulkenberg was one of the stars of the Spanish Grand Prix as he finished fifth for Sauber after starting 15th on the grid. It was only the second time the experienced German recorded a points finish in this campaign, but his team looked to have made a sizeable leap forward with their update package for that race and his rookie teammate Gabriel Bortoleto qualified an impressive 12th.

Another top-six finish cannot be anticipated but a return to the top ten at attractive odds of 9-2 is worth an interest. Hulkenberg performed well at the track for his former teams Force India and Renault, and he took 11th in the race for Haas last season after starting 17th.
