Lewis Hamilton has won the British Grand Prix a record nine times but his hopes of landing a tenth this weekend looked slim as the cars prepared to take to the Silverstone track for Friday's practices.

However, the Ferrari driver was cut from 20-1 to a top price 6-1 for Sunday's race after a very promising opening day for Hamilton and his team.

It hasn’t been an easy start to life at Maranello for seven-time world champion Hamilton, but his fortunes improved last weekend in Austria where he finished fourth, one place behind teammate Charles Leclerc. That coincided with the team introducing a new floor on the car.

Friday form can be misleading, but Hamilton going fastest in first practice and third in the second session will certainly have caught the crowd’s attention.

Lando Norris is hoping for a first Silverstone victory this weekend, and he looked in good shape.

Norris, who cut McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri’s championship lead to 15 points with his win in Austria, set the pace in the second practice session.

The McLaren duo went into the weekend as joint-favourites but Norris, who has looked the faster of the two at the last two race weekends, is now an 11-8 shot with Piastri available at 2-1.

Qualifying takes place on Saturday afternoon, and while Silverstone is a track that has seen plenty of overtaking, the battle for pole position is still super important. 

Norris is favourite to follow up his Austrian pole, but Leclerc is of interest at the prices.

He was a little fortunate to score a front-row start in Austria, but was second-fastest in Friday's practice despite a car issue he felt was costing him a lot of lap time.

George Russell has been in the spotlight this week amid rumours that Mercedes may be lining up world champion Max Verstappen to take his seat next year.

It was a low-key start to the weekend for Russell and his teammate Kimi Antonelli, but the forecast much cooler conditions Saturday and Sunday should suit them much better.
