Lewis Hamilton won the season opener for only the second time since 2008, but the seven-time world champion looks set to face a stern test from Red Bull and Max Verstappen this weekend.
Dutchman Verstappen scorched to pole position in Bahrain and is odds-on to repeat the feat at Imola as Formula One resumes after a three-week break.
It took all of Hamilton’s driving nous as well as some canny strategy calls from his Mercedes team to deny Verstappen victory.
Like Bahrain, Imola is a circuit where power is more important than aerodynamics.
From what we have seen so far, that will boost Mercedes’ chances, as the Red Bull was in a class of its own through the twistier sections of the Sakhir track last time.
Verstappen looked set to finish second at Imola last year before a tyre failure ended his race, and the Dutchman heads the race market this year.
Sebastian Vettel’s Aston Martin career got off to a miserable start in Bahrain, as he started from the back and finished 15th after a collision.
His teammate Lance Stroll qualified in the top ten, though, and four-time champion Vettel could be value at odds-against to finish in the points on Sunday.
