Lewis Hamilton is just 1-6 to retain his F1 world drivers championship after taking his fifth win of the season in the Canadian Grand Prix - despite finishing the race behind the Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel, who had started from pole, led throughout the race but Hamilton was forced to slam on the brakes and was almost put into the wall when the German briefly lost control on a narrow part of the circuit.

The stewards decided to hand Vettel a five-second time penalty which, when applied at the end of the race, dropped the Ferrari ace behind his rival into second position.

Vettel was trimmed slightly from 33-1 to 25-1 by Sky Bet despite falling to 62 points behind the Englishman.

Charles Leclerc finished third in the other Ferrari after an uneventful drive with Hamilton's Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas fourth.

Bottas, who is now 30 points adrift of Hamilton, is 13-2 to claim a maiden title.

The circus returns to Europe for the French Grand Prix on June 23.
