Montreal can keep playoff hopes alive
Montreal v New York City
Sky Sports Football, 12.30am Wednesday night
New York City have booked their place in the playoffs and it's quite possible they could take their eye off the ball at Montreal.
Patrick Vieira's men have failed to win in their last three but the 1-1 draw against Houston last time out ensured the boys from the Big Apple are limping into the post-season.
That New York have been able to make the playoffs is also down to the likes of Montreal, a team who have hit the brakes at the worst possible time.
Les Bleu-blanc-noir were cruising towards the playoffs a month ago but are now on a run of five defeats in their last six.
Remarkably, the one game which wasn't a defeat was a 5-3 triumph at the Eastern Conference's runaway leaders, Toronto, a timely reminder of what the Impact are capable of.
Indeed, they weren't too shabby at Atlanta last time out, when they slipped to a 2-0 defeat. It's fine margins and the luck wasn't on Montreal's side in that assignment.
Mauro Biello's men were excellent over the first half of the season and a final burst can still see them achieve their target of a top-six finish. But with Western Conference whipping boys Colorado still to play, Montreal know they can retrieve the situation – though they surely have to win.
The goals have dried up for New York. Nineteen-goal David Villa has not scored in his last three and maybe a long, hard season is taking its toll on the 35-year-old Spanish striker.
Montreal will be looking to their own in-form hitman, Nacho Piatti, who has bagged 17 this term including two in that extraordinary win in Toronto.
