Mathieu Van der Poel to win Milan-San Remo
1pt 5-2 general
The first and longest Monument of the year, Milan-San Remo has returned to its traditional spring spot in the calendar and Saturday's 112th edition promises to be a showdown between the form three riders in the peloton.
After last year's Covid-related makeover, the route has a more familiar feel and it will be on the closing Cipressa and Poggio climbs where the race will ignite.
Romantics would love to see Philippe Gilbert achieve his goal of becoming only the fourth man to win all five Monuments but at 38, finding one last push after 299km of racing may prove beyond him.
Instead, world champion and 2019 winner Julian Alaphilippe, last year's hero Wout van Aert and the imperious Mathieu van der Poel are likely to decide the outcome.
All three took wins at the recent Tirreno-Adriatico, Van Aert also finishing second on the General Classification, but Van der Poel looks the one to beat.
The Dutchman slammed through Siena to win Strade Bianche and last Sunday embarked on a trademark 52km solo breakaway to seal his second of two stages at Tirreno.
With Alpecin-Fenix handed a wildcard, they are sure to animate the race and whether it's through a late attack or a sprint for the line, Van der Poel is tough to ignore in La Classicissima.
