Race preview

Saturday marks the 111th edition of Milan-San Remo and in-form Belgian Wout van Aert looks the man to beat.

Usually held in March, La Classicissima is the longest of cycling’s five prestigious one-day Monuments at almost 300km.

Recent winners have tended to be strong men who have held on long enough to contest the sprint. That was the case last year when Julian Alaphilippe triumphed on the Via Roma and Van Aert is developing into a similar rider to the Frenchman.

Victory at last week’s Strade Bianche and third place at Milan-Torino, where he demonstrated a decent finish, show he’s in good form and having been sixth last year, he could have the legs to either escape or win a sprint.

Milan-Torino winner Arnaud Demare also deserves consideration having won this race in 2016, while Caleb Ewan is high on bookmaker’s lists after his second to Demare on Wednesday.

Victory at Milan-San Remo would see veteran Belgian Philippe Gilbert become just the fourth man in history to complete the set of all five Monuments.

At 38, age might be against him although as his teammate Ewan is Lotto-Soudal’s primary option, having carte blanche could work in Gilbert’s favour.
