Great Britain's best hope of a Winter Olympic medal always looked likely to come via the curling rink and the men's team will have the chance to return from Beijing with at least silver if they win their semi-final match on Thursday (12.05pm UK time).

GB skip Bruce Mouat narrowly missed a mixed doubles medal but he has since led the men's team to a 7-1 record, which was good enough to secure qualification with one round-robin match remaining.

Great Britain face fellow confirmed semi-finalists Canada in the early hours of Thursday morning in a match which will help determine the makeup of the last four. Sweden have also qualified and one of the USA, the Russian Olympic Commitee or Norway will complete the quartet.

Fast-forward to Friday morning where the best bet of the day could prove to be Thomas Krol in the men's 1,000m speed skating. The Dutch long-track specialist is bidding to go one better than he did when claiming silver in the 1,500m.

Krol blazed to an Olympic record-time in the 1,500m but was pipped to the title moments later by fellow Dutchman Kjeld Nuis, who is not on the start list for this shorter event which Krol tends to prefer and in which he is the current European champion.
