Matthew Fitzpatrick can make strong start on suitable terrain

Ryder Cup battle hots up in Denmark

It could be time to back Matthew Fitzpatrick
1 of 1

Sky Sports Golf, 10.30am Thursday

Matthew Fitzpatrick needs to win the Made In Denmark to have any hope of automatically retaining his Ryder Cup place, and the highly motivated Sheffield lad can be fancied to outscore his playing partners in the first round.

The new Silkeborg Ry venue looks perfect for Fitzpatrick to show his best form – it is tight, tree-lined and short – and he can outclass Robert Karlsson and Matt Wallace in the 12.20pm (UK and Ireland time) match.

If Thomas Pieters flops in Denmark, Fitzpatrick or Russell Knox could sneak a wildcard pick from European skipper Thomas Bjorn, so there is everything to play for. Fitzpatrick has not been in terrific form, but can be fancied to raise his game enough on suitable terrain to boss this contest.

Eddie Pepperell is in the same group as Bjorn for the first two days, with the Ryder Cup pressure ratcheted up, and the Englishman looks a vulnerable favourite for the 12.30pm contest. Martin Kaymer, being ignored in the Cup chat despite past heroics, is a fair price to defeat Pepperell and Bjorn.
