Match preview

Bookmakers expect Manchester United to be too strong for Champions League visitors Istanbul Basaksehir but there are plenty of question marks hanging over the 1-4 shots.

Take their home form, for example. United have lost three of their five Premier League matches at Old Trafford this season, including a 6-1 drubbing by Tottenham, drawing 0-0 with Chelsea and requiring a twice-taken penalty to see off struggling West Brom on Saturday.

They must also banish the memories of their meeting with Basaksehir on matchday three when some woeful defending helped the underdogs record a 2-1 victory.

The city of Istanbul famously has one foot in Europe and one in Asia but United's defence seemed to be in a different continent entirely when veteran striker Demba Ba was put through to score Basaksehir's opening goal.

The layers are clearly happy to put a line through that result and focus on United's impressive start to the group stage which saw them pinch a 2-1 away win over last season's runners-up Paris St-Germain and thump RB Leipzig 5-0.

Basaksehir, meanwhile, lost 2-0 to Leipzig and PSG before their shock win over the Red Devils and they have made a patchy start to their title defence after winning the Turkish league for the first time last season.

They took only one point from their first four matches, failing to score a single goal, before a run of four straight victories. That sequence came to an end with a 3-2 defeat at Besiktas last weekend where they went 3-0 down before a late brace from Fredrik Gulbrandsen.

With 13 goals in their last five league matches, along the two in their home win over United, the visitors should be confident of landing a blow on a wobbly home defence.

United's first three league wins of the season were high-scoring victories at Brighton (3-2), Newcastle (4-1) and Everton (3-1) and backing the hosts to win with both teams scoring could be the best bet.

Despite his side's insipid displays against Chelsea and Arsenal, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still has a formidable array of attacking talent in his squad with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani in front of the impressive Bruno Fernandes.

The shock defeat in Istanbul, along with the sluggish win over West Brom, means United cannot afford to coast through this game and the likes of Greenwood, Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek will be hoping for opportunities to kickstart their seasons.

Key stat

Both teams have scored in five of Istanbul Basaksehir's last six matches.
