Lewis Hamilton can get Canadian Grand Prix weekend off to a flyer

Championship leader has excellent Montreal record

Lewis Hamilton leads the drivers championship

Canadian Grand Prix practice one
Sky Sports F1, 3pm Friday

Lewis Hamilton couldn’t challenge Daniel Ricciardo or Sebastian Vettel in Monaco last time, but the championship leader will be confident of bouncing back in Canada this weekend.

Hamilton has a fantastic record at Montreal. He has won every time he has seen the chequered flag at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve except in 2013, when he was third, and has won from pole position in each of the last three years.

The Mercedes driver looks the right favourite to go fastest in the first practice session, as he did 12 months ago.

Ferrari will be hoping to recapture the form that saw Sebastian Vettel win the first two races of the season.

The Canadian circuit may well suit their car better than the two most recent races in Monaco and Spain.

However, we may not see their true pace until later in the weekend with no Ferrari driver topping the opening session at a grand prix this season.

Ricciardo dominated the weekend in Monaco, but his Red Bull is unlikely to be suited to this week’s very different circuit, which puts an emphasis on engine power.

Recommendation
L Hamilton fastest in practice one
2pts 15-8 general
