European Masters ante-post favourite, Alexander Noren, made a poor start as defending champion at Crans-sur-Sierre.

The Swede, seeking a third Crans title, was playing his first tournament as a married man and looked sluggish in the wake of his weekend wedding. He made four birdies and four bogeys in a level-par 70, drifting from 10-1 to 33-1.

Miguel Angel Jimenez, a pre-tournament 80-1 chance at the age of 53, was the early pacesetter. The Spanish veteran fired a 64.

Thomas Detry closed with two birdies in his final three holes to open with a 70 and better can be expected from the Belgian debutant in round two. Detry, with 18 holes of competitive experience under his belt at Crans, can outscore Marcus Fraser and SSP Chawrasia.
