Roger Federer breezed past first-round opponent Aljaz Bedene 6-3 6-4 6-3 and is a red-hot favourite to continue his title defence with a victory over Jan-Lennard Struff.

It looks a straightforward challenge for Federer, who has played Struff on just one previous occasion, winning 6-4 7-6 at Halle in 2016.

Stan Wawrinka, another former Melbourne champion, is a potential semi-final opponent for Federer but looks less certain to reach the later stages of the tournament.

The Swiss number two dropped a set in his first-round match against Ricardas Berankis but is long odds-on to defeat American Tennys Sandgren in the round of 64.

Nick Kyrgios was trimmed from 14-1 to 11-1 to win the title after advancing to the third round with a 7-5 6-4 7-6 victory over Viktor Troicki.

The Australian faces a tougher test in round three but is an odds-on favourite to defeat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who was a losing Australian Open finalist in 2008.
