Kusal could chime again for Sri Lanka in Galle
Zimbabwe are 4-1 with Hills to follow up their sensational six-wicket success over Sri Lanka in Galle on Friday with victory in Sunday’s second ODI of five at the same venue.
The Zims’ chase of 317 was the highest ever completed in a Teardrop Isle 50-over match. It showed how Sri Lanka’s superb win over India in the Champions Trophy group stage last month was an anomaly among their struggles for confidence and consistency since the retirement of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.
Graham Ford resigned as head coach after their Champions Trophy exit, star bowler Lasith Malinga got in trouble with board for media comments and has struggled for fitness, skipper Angelo Mathews is playing as a batsman only because of injury and there have been regular tinkerings to the line-up. Middle-order mainstay Dinesh Chandimal is missing for both games in Galle.
However, it was not all bad for Sri Lanka in the first match as three of their top four hit fifties and Mathews made 43.
Number three Kusal Mendis top-scored with 86 and he is worth a wager at 3-1 to do so again. He hit 89 against India and made 57 against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy and cracked a century against Bangladesh in March.
