Kerber holds all the aces in Stuttgart
The European clay season hots up this week and home favourite Angelique Kerber looks to hold all the aces in her bid to clinch a third straight title in Stuttgart.
The two-time champion heads a draw that houses a number of top-class performers, but most of her competition have plenty to prove and she rates a sound bet to follow up last year's success.
Three-time Stuttgart champion Maria Sharapova returns to the WTA this week following her doping ban and would rate a big danger if returning in the same vein.
However, she’s likely to come on for the run and may use this as a stepping stone to bigger things.
Johanna Konta is 0-2 in Stuttgart and can be readily opposed, while third seed Dominika Cibulkova has fallen in the opening round of each of her four appearances in this tournament and has to show her liking for this venue.
Simona Halep isn't at her best on a clay surface and could come up short, while last year's French Open heroine Garbine Muguruza has been plagued by injuries since that success and is not someone to place maximum faith in.
