Kasatkina has the tools to take out Kerber

Rising Russian has won the last two meetings between the pair

Daria Kasatkina has a winning record against Angelique Kerber
1 of 1

BT Sport 1, 10.30am Wednesday

Angelique Kerber played well to dismiss Naomi Osaka in the opening round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open on Monday but the former world number one has struggled for consistency all season and she could crash out at the hands of Daria Kasatkina.

The exciting young Russian showed determination to come back from a set down to beat Madison Brengle in her opener and, while she will have to do better to down Kerber, she will take confidence from a positive head-to-head record over the German player.

Kerber won their first meeting in the quarter-finals of last year's Rogers Cup but Kasatkina upset the odds on two occasions earlier this year and she has a chance to do so again.

Kerber's form has not improved since those upsets and Kasatkina, who struggled with injury niggles in the middle part of the season, looks fit and healthy and the variety in her game should keep Kerber on her toes.

There's little between them on current form and it may pay to side with the underdog.

D Kasatkina
