Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas suffer pre-Masters disappointment in California
Patrick Cantlay pips the superstar duo at Sherwood Country Club
Patrick Cantlay pipped Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas in a battle for the Zozo Championship title, the ante-post 30-1 chance upsetting the more fancied runners.
Thomas took a one-shot lead into the final round, which quickly became two when he birdied the first hole, but by the 12th tee Rahm had taken over in front. Rahm was on 23 under par with seven holes to play, appearing to take command, but two ugly bogeys immediately followed.
A level-par back-nine was not good enough for Thomas to take advantage of Rahm's faltering - and it was Cantlay who made the decisive charge instead. Birdies at the 13th, 14th and 15th sent the Californian clear in his home state and a par at the 18th was enough for Sherwood Country Club glory.
The PGA Tour offering this week is the Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course. European Tour punters, many reeling from the victory of 500-1 outsider Ross McGowan, face a difficult assignment - the inaugural Cyprus Open at the Aphrodite Hills Resort, Paphos.
Major champions Henrik Stenson and Danny Willett are Bermuda runners, while Spanish duo Pablo Larrazabal and Jorge Campillo are among the most notable entrants for the low-key Cyprus event.
