Johanna Konta has not been doing much to write home about all season before the switch to American hard courts, but she looks to have come alive in California.
She opened in the Silicon Valley Classic with a 6-1 6-0 mauling of Serena Williams and followed that by sweeping aside the useful Sofia Kenin 6-1 6-4.
Konta’s reward is a date with fourth seed Elise Mertens in the San Jose quarter-finals and while the Belgian is a battler in a similar mould to the Briton, if the 2016 Stanford champion has found her best form then she could be difficult to stop.
The selection is 8-15 which big-hitters should consider, but it may be worth taking the 4-6 that Konta successfully concedes her opponent a start of 2.5 games.
Victoria Azarenka, who will be fancying her title chances with Serena gone and top seed Garbine Muguruza having pulled out before playing a match, is 1-3 to see off Danielle Collins but the American is capable of taking the game to the Belarusian.
J Konta -2.5 games
