It seems a long time since Devon Petersen survived six match darts in his first game against Wayne Jones and the South African has upped his game as the tournament has progressed.

However, he may have to find another level again as he takes on Nathan Aspinall. The Asp is enjoying his best ever year and has impressed with his demeanour on the big stage. The Stockport youngster looked in fine fettle in dismantling Kyle Anderson and looks worthy of a bet.

Joyce v Wade
Wade leads 3-0
James Wade has had a strange experience at the World Championship this year, scraping through both matches with plenty of controversy along the way.

The draw has been kind to him, though, and with his finishing looking good under pressure, expect him to dig in when it matters to see off Geordie dark horse Ryan Joyce.

‘Relentless’ Ryan has already won three matches on his Ally Pally debut, including taking the scalp of Simon Whitlock, so will be no pushover.

However, he has yet to average more than 91 and each time these two have met on the floor this year Joyce has come off worse. Expect a similar script and back a narrow Wade win.

M Smith v Searle

Michael Smith survived a tough test against John Henderson yesterday and he can expect another thorough examination against Ryan Searle.

The Somerset Slinger has dropped only two sets but Bully Boy presents by far his toughest challenge of the tournament and the clash looks one to sit out from a betting perspective.

Last year's semi-finalist Jamie Lewis has once again saved his best for the World Championship, hitting 21 180s in 12 sets in his first two outings.

The Welshman certainly has more than a sporting chance of seeing off 12th seed Dave Chisnall but his head-to-head record tempers enthusiasm to back him to upset the odds.

Instead, bank on a close affair and back the clash to feature plenty of maximums.

Chizzy consistently tops the 180 stats and with Lewis clearly no slouch around the lipstick either, bookmakers have set the bar high. In a close-looking encounter, however, the 180 line still looks value to be covered.

These are uncharted waters for Luke Humphries, who got the best of a below-par Dimitri van den Bergh in round three.

Rob Cross will surely present a much sterner test for the young­ arrowsmith.

The reigning world champion has averaged over 100 in both matches on the Ally Pally stage – despite some slow starts – and sounded confident prior to seeing off Cristo Reyes.

Cross should take another step towards retaining his title, and the prices look about right.
