"He's been in great form and Chelsea had an unbelievable finish to the season"
Nigel Winterburn urges Gareth Southgate to start Ben Chilwell
Former England left-back Nigel Winterburn believes Ben Chilwell is the better candidate to to start for England over Luke Shaw for the opening European Championship game against Croatia.
Gareth Southgate will have to choose between Champions League winner Chilwell and Manchester United's Shaw and ex-Arsenal man Winterburn reckons the European success of Thomas Tuchel's Blues will see him in flying form come Euro 2020.
Winterburn told FreeSuperTips.com: "I wouldn't mind which one of them played, but if I'm to pick one I'd go Chilwell just based on the feelgood factor.
"He's been in great form and Chelsea had an unbelievable finish to the season, so I'd go that way.
"The question is whether Southgate goes with four or five at the back and if he prefers one or the other based on the system.
"Saka is another player who could equally play in that position, so England have some good options there."
Winterburn believes England have huge potential and added: "We've got huge talent coming through - I don't think it's too early for them because some of these players have made big impacts at their clubs, so why should it be too early for England?
"It's all good having the talent, but they have to produce on the day and I would be slightly disappointed if we didn't make it to the semi-finals.
"We've got a lot of individual talent, but they’ve got to gel together and that's down to the manager.
"I would want to get to the semi-finals but I'd say the quarter-finals are a minimum.
"To me it would be a failure not getting that far and I'm so confident about this current team at the moment.
I'm not getting carried away and say for sure that we will win it, but we're in there with an obvious chance.
"Our performances as we go through the tournament will show us if we're going to have a good attempt at it.
"I think we've got huge potential, so I'm pretty positive for the first time in a long time."
