Independiente value to grind out first-leg win
Santos may be silenced
Copa Libertadores last 16, first leg
Argentina's national team couldn’t get past the last 16 of the World Cup but Independiente look to have a decent chance of advancing beyond that stage in the Copa Libertadores.
They take on Santos in an intriguing Argentina-Brazil clash and they are worth backing to claim a valuable victory in the home leg.
These teams had identical records in the group stage of this competition, with three wins, one draw, two defeats and a goal difference of plus two.
That was enough to earn Santos top spot in their group, while Independiente finished second on goal difference to free-scoring Corinthians.
Independiente’s two meetings with Corinthians were competitive – they lost 1-0 at home but won the reverse fixture 2-1 – and the Brazilian Serie A standings suggest they have less to fear from Santos.
Corinthians are seventh, six places and five points above Santos, whose 3-0 victory over Sport Recife on Sunday ended a winless run of 11 games in all competitions.
They failed to score in six of those matches and the first leg is unlikely to be an expansive affair. Independiente scored just six times in six group matches but they are a tough nut to crack on their own patch and should be backed to grind out a first-leg advantage.
