In-form Adam Lyth to make light work of Birmingham bowling attack
Joe Root out for Vikings
Sky Sports Cricket, 6.30pm Friday
Yorkshire fell one run short in last Friday’s dramatic T20 Blast tussle against rivals Lancashire but opener Adam Lyth can ease the pain by guiding the Vikings to victory over Birmingham in front of the Sky cameras at Headingley.
The Roses clash at Old Trafford had been reduced to 14 overs a side due to an earlier downpour but that didn’t take away any of the gloss with Yorkshire making a good fist of chasing down 176.
England’s returning internationals David Willey, Liam Plunkett and Adil Rashid failed to fire but the lively Lyth smashed 60 off just 26 balls and could star again with teammate Joe Root a notable absentee.
Root carved out 51 off 22 balls against Lancashire but is replaced by Tom Kohler-Cadmore as he reports for Test duty. Spinner Rashid has also been named in the squad for next week’s match with India despite wanting to focus on limited-overs cricket.
On the same evening as Yorkshire’s dramatic defeat, the Bears were involved in a thriller of their own as they tied a high-scoring clash with toothless Northampton - both sides finished on 231-5.
That result extended Birmingham’s T20 Blast winless run to three matches and the fact that the struggling Steelbacks, who are bottom of the North Group without a win from six outings, were able to post such a lofty score must fill Lyth with confidence.
If Yorkshire are going to win they will need their openers to perform but Willey looked out of sorts in last week’s defeat to the Lightning and the reliable Lyth looks most likely to deliver in Root’s absence.
Worcestershire all-rounder Moeen Ali joins Root and Rashid in the England squad, while Essex pace bowler Jamie Porter has earned his first call-up.
Chris Woakes remains on the sidelines, but Somerset spinners Dom Bess and Jack Leach will train with the squad.
