Improving Marterer ready to lower Sousa's colours
Versatile seventh seed is not easily opposed
Maximilian Marterer looks as if he may have a decent future on the ATP Tour and the young German could be ready to upset seventh seed Joao Sousa in round two of the Sofia Open.
Marterer, 22, opened in Bulgaria with a 7-6 6-4 victory over Malek Jaziri and the Tunisian is not an easy opponent to defeat indoors.
Sousa, who has been Portugal's top player in recent years, is a versatile operator so is not easily opposed.
But such is the promise that Marterer, who defeated Fernando Verdasco in the Australian Open last month, has been showing that he may be able to impose himself on a match like this.
The oddsmakers are expecting a close encounter and that looks another positive pointer to the chances of the lower-ranked player.
