Improved La Fiorita to give Linfield a first-leg scare

San Marino champions have strengthened this summer

Northern Ireland's all-time leading goalscorer David Healy is in charge at Linfield
1 of 1

Linfield v La Fiorita
7.45pm Wednesday

All the talk around Windsor Park is of Celtic’s impending trip in the second qualifying round of the Champions League, rather overlooking the fact that Linfield have a first-round encounter to win first.

That assignment is a double-header with La Fiorita, the champions of San Marino, and you get the sense that Blues fans and staff think it’s a done deal.

In fairness to them, it certainly should be. La Fiorita’s less than proud record in Europe reads played ten, lost ten, goals scored one, conceded 35.

If David Healy’s Premiership champions go about their business properly and professionally they should be good things. Bookmakers certainly agree that’s the case.

But a word of warning. La Fiorita may be historically hopeless but they have strengthened substantially in the summer with the acquisitions of experienced professionals like former Juventus trainee Marco Brighi, Crocefisso Miglietta, once of Parma, and 43-year-old ex-Roma and Italy player Damiano Tommasi.

San Marino’s all-time leading scorer Andy Selva is out but this lot might not be the mugs they once were.
