Hitman Holt too strong for shaky Sheriff
Prize-money sure to tempt players to perform at their peak
Starts midday Tuesday
The Championship League starts at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena on Tuesday and the tasty reward for the winner is a spot in the Champion of Champions event.
Stephen Maguire, Kyren Wilson, Ryan Day, Mark King, Zhou Yuelong, Michael Holt and Anthony Hamilton get the ball rolling in Group One, with the top four qualifying for the playoff stage and the victor moving on to the winners’ group.
The bottom two cuemen are eliminated and the fifth-placed player along with the three playoff losers move into the next group and are joined by three new competitors.
It’s the best-of-seven-frames and while some of the bigger names may be using the event as a tee-up for the Masters later this month there is enough prize-money on offer to ensure plenty of competitive contests.
One match that may not be as close as bookmakers believe, however, is the Nottingham derby between Michael Holt and Anthony Hamilton. Bookmakers are offering 4-5 about the Hitman getting the better of Hamilton and that looks worth a bet.
Both potters are in action earlier in the day so punters wanting to get with Holt should do so before he opens up his campaign against King.
The Hitman is a classy cueman and while he hasn’t always delivered on his undoubted talent he looks to have more things going for him than the Sheriff.
Hamilton is a top-notch player on his day too, but he failed to qualify for the Shanghai Masters and has lost in the first round of the Northern Ireland Open, the Scottish Open and the Betway UK Championship this season. He could find things tough.
