Simona Halep crushed Anastasija Sevastova in the final of the Bucharest Open earlier this month and the Romanian can repeat the trick when the pair meet in the quarter-final in Stuttgart.

Halep double-bageled the Latvian to claim the title at her home tournament and she continued her form with a similarly emphatic straight-sets win over the Czech Republic’s Barbora Strycova in her Stuttgart curtain-raiser.

Sevastova showed no ill effects by defeating Jo Konta on Thursday but the Briton tends to struggle on the clay and her demoralising defeat at the hands of Halep may still be fresh in the memory.

Fernando Verdasco saves his best tennis for the red dirt and the veteran Spaniard should make experience count against improving youngster Laslo Djere in the last eight of the ATP Budapest.

Djere toppled seventh seed Viktor Troicki in the last round and is heading in the right direction but tackling Verdasco, who has won five clay ranking titles in his career, may come too soon in his development.
