Gothenburg can ease to victory over struggling Halmstad
Gothenburg will be looking to improve significantly on 11th place in the Swedish top flight and can make some progress by winning at home to second-bottom Halmstad.
Historically, Gothenberg have been one of the most successful teams in Sweden and their tally of 18 league titles is second only to Malmo.
However, they have won the league just once in the last 20 years and this season they are a 16 points behind pace-setters Malmo.
On the plus side, there are only 12 games into a 30-game season and there is still time to get into the battle for Europa League qualification berths, awarded for second and third place.
Gothenburg returned from the four-week summer break by winning 2-0 at Jonkopping Sodra and have a chance to make some significant progress in the next two months because seven of their next 11 league matches are at home.
While Gothenburg are looking to push up into the top half of the table, Halmstad are battling to stave off relegation.
Halmstad won promotion via the playoffs last season but didn't do nearly enough to strengthen their squad and seem to be paying the price.
The strugglers have collected just seven points from 13 matches and haven't won since a 1-0 triumph at home to Ostersund in their opening game of the season.
They have scored just nine goals - making them the joint-lowest scorers in the division, alongside fellow strugglers Sundsvall, and it is hard to imagine them stopping the rot at Gothenburg, who they haven't defeated in the last eight meetings.
It should be a matter of time before Gothenburg (spearheaded by six-goal top scorer Tobias Hysen) find the breakthrough, and there may not be much of a response from a shot-shy Halmstad side on course for the drop.
