Robert MacIntyre is clear favourite for another European Tour event, despite never having won one under a conventional 72-hole strokeplay format, and the Scot can be left alone at a best-price 12-1 for the Made in HimmerLand.

MacIntyre finished 49th in the US PGA Championship in South Carolina on Sunday, then explained how much he is missing home, so a dearth of desire for Denmark may result in a lacklustre effort from the market leader.

Steve Palmer's top tip

Julian Suri 90-1

Injury and illness slowed the career of Julian Suri, who had a hernia operation at the end of 2018, but fitness and form has been gradually returning for the American giant and the Made in HimmerLand represents a fantastic opportunity.

Suri has drifted from well inside the world's top 100 to outside the top 500, but his last two tournaments have been encouraging - 27th place in the Canary Islands Championship was followed by 21st in the Betfred British Masters.

The New York-born 30-year-old will fancy his chances of building on that bright Belfry performance at the scene of his greatest European Tour moment. HimmerLand is where Suri became a European Tour champion in 2017, romping to a four-shot victory with a final-round 64.

The Florida-based raider did not even have a European Tour card when he arrived for that HimmerLand debut four years ago - he accessed the tournament because he won a Challenge Tour event a couple of months prior - but he fell in love with the layout and carded a 19-under-par total.

Suri has got a 100 per cent record at HimmerLand - one visit, one victory - and the fancy odds against his name do not adequately reflect his course credentials and ability.

Next best bet

Laurie Canter 35-1

Serious post-lockdown waves were made by Laurie Canter last year - he finished fifth in the Wales Open, second in the Portugal Masters, second in the Italian Open and fifth in the DP World Tour Championship - then fourth place in the Dubai Desert Classic got his 2021 campaign off to a strong start. A month-and-a-half off after the Qatar Masters, though, seemed to unsettle the Bath man.

Since returning to the circuit, Canter has form figures of 48-40-30, improving with each event, and he could find a gallop again in Denmark. When outside the world's top 1,000, Canter finished 34th on his HimmerLand debut, then he was 60th on his subsequent visit when still outside the world's top 600. He turns up this time as world number 130 and equipped to overwhelm the course.

Other selections

Calum Hill 30-1

Nicolai Hojgaard 66-1

Lasse Jensen 500-1

Another European Tour maiden who will be sensing his chance at HimmerLand is Calum Hill, who has been strongly threatening a breakthrough. Fourth place in the Saudi International has been followed by eighth in the Kenya Open, third in the Savannah Classic, 12th in the Canary Islands Championship and eighth in the British Masters.

Hill has missed a couple of tiddlers and fired a few wild drives, but the Scot is making bundles of birdies and should do enough to contend. He has won three times on the Challenge Tour - the last of those victories coming in Denmark in 2019.

Nicolai Hojgaard has been swinging superbly in recent weeks, following seventh place in the Austrian Open with 15th in Gran Canaria and fourth spot in the Canary Islands Championship. The gifted youngster won a Nordic League event in Denmark in 2018 and could be ready for European Tour success in his homeland this week.

And another Dane can also be expected to give a good account of himself, despite enormous prices being chalked up against his name. Lasse Jensen has won twice on the Nordic Golf League - the latest victory coming in Sweden in October. Over the last eight months, Jensen has been magnificent on the Nordic Golf League, finishing third in his last two tournaments. In October he finished second in the Race to Himmerland event, which stages one round at the HimmerLand track being used this week. The 36-year-old Copenhagen man carded a 64 in that round.

Jensen used to be a European Tour contender. He was seventh in the 2014 Made in Denmark at HimmerLand, runner-up in the 2016 Nordea Masters, third in the 2017 Dubai Desert Classic and fourth in the 2017 Hassan Trophy. Stock markets became his passion and his golf clearly suffered, but he has got his game back in shape and could be a dangerous outsider this week.

Players to note

JB Hansen
The Challenge Tour event at HimmerLand in 2018 went the way of Hansen. He won the Joburg Open at the end of November and is another dangerous Dane.

Jason Scrivener
The Aussie tied for 23rd place at Kiawah Island last week, having finished runner-up in Abu Dhabi in January. He should go well if he can overcome jet-lag.

Bernd Wiesberger
The last Made in HimmerLand went the way of the Austrian giant. Maybe a return to a happy hunting ground will revive his form.

Adrian Meronk
The Polish powerhouse, third in the Tenerife Open and third in the British Masters, continues to threaten a maiden title.

Course overview The European Tour moved to unchartered territory in 2014 for the inaugural Made in Denmark event and HimmerLand hosted from then through 2017. After one year elsewhere (Silkeborg Ry), HimmerLand (which hosted the 2018 Made in Denmark Challenge on the Challenge Tour) resumed European Tour duties in 2019. The 2020 edition was cancelled due to coronavirus. Thomas Bjorn won the 1995 Himmerland Open at this venue, a Challenge Tour gathering, but the course was extensively redesigned in a €2m project by Philip Spogaard in 2012 to prepare it for top-flight golf, and bears little resemblance to its late-90s shape. It is an exposed, undulating layout, which has greens full of slope. Short hitters will not fear this venue. It is only 6,751 yards long and 645 yards of that comprises one hole – the giant par-five 11th. There are five sub-400-yard par-fours and two extremely short par-threes (155-yard tenth and 128-yard 16th). There are only two reachable par-fives – the fourth and sixth.

Weather forecast Rain has fallen in the build-up to soften the track and further showers are expected through Thursday, which is set to be the breeziest stage of the tournament. Calm, sunny weather is forecast for the final three days, but it is set to be fairly cold throughout, with temperatures never bettering 17C.

Type of player suited to the challenge The last three HimmerLand winners were big hitters - Thomas Pieters, Julian Suri and Bernd Wiesberger. A rain-softened track and cold temperatures may see powerhouses assert themselves again. The 262-yard par-four 14th is a gift for the longest players in the field.
