The field at this week's Bermuda Championship cannot be described as high class and it is difficult to analyse who will go well at Port Royal as their is no course form to go on.

It is the time of year when graduates from the secondary Korn Ferry Tour can make their mark and several feature prominently in the market as many of the game's leading lights have headed to China instead.

Many have posted top-ten finishes this week and Lanto Griffin heads to Southampton Parish having won the Houston Open three weeks.

However, Robby Shelton has not performed on that level and he may take longer to settle into stronger competition.

Shelton flew out of the traps with rounds of 62 and 65 in his first PGA Tour test at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, but he slipped to a seventh-placed finish.

In subsequent performances he has finished 28th, 52nd, 42nd and missed the cut in Houston so there could still be work to do.

Don't be surprised if his effort this week is below Brian Gay's.

The 47-year-old from Fort Worth, who has won four times on the PGA Tour, was seventh at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and has performed well on Bermuda grass in the past, so he could put in another good show.

Swede Alex Noren, who has put in some steady performances on the European Tour of late without being spectacular, and Scotland's Russell Knox lead the top European market, but Sepp Straka provides some each-way value at 13-2.

The Austrian regained some form with fourth spot at Houston after five successive missed cuts, but he has performed well in weaker PGA Tour events this year, claiming third spot at the Barbasol Championship, during Open week at Royal Portrush, and 12th at the Barracuda the following week.

Noren is the chief threat as the lowest-ranked player in the field, while Knox has not done much since winning the Irish Open in 2018 so is worth taking on.

The European contingent is not strong and Straka can at least finish in the top three among them.
