Wyndham Championship golf: Steve Palmer's tournament special bets, tips and odds
Jordan Spieth, Webb Simpson & Patrick Reid should post low scores at Sedgefield
Wyndham Championship
TV: Sky Sports Golf, 6pm Thursday
Wyndham Championship favourite Webb Simpson is an early starter at Sedgefield Country Club, the North Carolina native getting his home-state campaign underway at 12.50pm UK and Ireland time, with Patrick Reed and Si Woo Kim for company.
Simpson, the 2011 Wyndham champion, is in fine fettle and should get out of the blocks smartly, but Reed won this title in 2013 and also seems likely to be among the birdies. The marquee morning match may be tight and preference as a threeball wager is for Jordan Spieth to beat Paul Casey and Charles Howell in the 6pm contest.
Jordan Spieth showing signs of life
Spieth has been in the doldrums but showed significant signs of life in the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational last week and will expect to be a contender at Sedgefield. He made 22 birdies in Memphis last week, including eight on Sunday, completing a six-under-par weekend.
Spieth suffered two triple-bogeys in round one of the WGC and two double-bogeys in round four, yet still finished tied 12th for the tournament because he made so many birdies. TPC Southwind, where the Texan came a cropper a few times last week, is full of water hazards and severely punishes errant shots. Sedgefield will afford much more long-game leniency towards Spieth, who is putting superbly and should feast on birdies at an easy layout over the next four days.
The last time Spieth tackled Sedgefield he lost in a playoff and the three-time Major champion appears by far the biggest danger to Simpson, Reed and Brandt Snedeker for Wyndham glory on Sunday. An increasingly jaunty Jordan should dominate Casey and Howell, two weak putters, on the Sedgefield dancefloors.
Expect plenty of birdies at Sedgefield
The winning score at the Wyndham in the last three years has been 21, 22 and 21 under par, so 5-6 about 19 under par or better winning looks a decent investment with Betway. Sporadic storms should keep the track soft and there is hardly any breeze in the forecast. One of Simpson, Reed, Snedeker and Spieth – or somebody else – seems set to spend the week going birdie crazy.
Reed and Snedeker, both former Sedgefield champions who have shown plenty of form over the last few weeks, are worth backing at 10-1 in a Betway special for them both to finish in the top ten.
And after Brooks Koepka and Simpson gave Racing Post Sport followers a one-two in the WGC last Sunday, riding the wave with the 125-1 about a Simpson-Reed dual forecast is a recommended course of action.
