Story so far

Patrick Reed is hunting a place in the US Presidents Cup team and the provocative Texan has done his chances no harm by taking the lead after the third round of the Northern Trust.

Reed shot a four-under 67 to seize the initiative in the first of the three FedEx Cup playoff events and the six-time PGA Tour winner is favourite to claim his first title since the 2018 Masters.

Accurate Mexican Abraham Ancer is one back and Reed's closest pursuer, while Brandt Snedeker, who shot a Saturday 63, and in-form Spaniard Jon Rahm are two shots behind the leader.

Racing Post Sport ante-post selection Justin Rose is three shots adrift alongside fellow Englishman Danny Willett and US Tour maiden Harold Varner.

Final-round advice

Patrick Reed has been threatening PGA Tour leaderboards for several weeks and it's no surprise to see the 29-year-old topping the standings at Liberty National.

A winner of this event in 2016 when it was called the Barclays, Reed has been steadily playing himself into form, finishing in the top 25 in his last five events, and 9-4 is an accurate assessment of his chances.

The Texan is usually a clutch putter when the pressure is on, as he has shown numerous times at the Ryder Cup and when closing out his first Major at Augusta National last year.

It's hard to see him completely blowing out but a one-shot lead is precarious and conditions will lend themselves to low scores with the wind likely to be minimal on the Hudson River.

The New Jersey layout typically favours players who are strong from tee to green and, if anyone is likely to hunt down Reed, it could well be Jon Rahm.

The Spanish bull came from off the pace to win the Irish Open at Lahinch recently and has since finished 11th at the Open and seventh at the WGC-St Jude Invitational.

There's arguably no player in the world in better form at present and victory in the shade of the Manhattan skyline would give Rahm an excellent platform in his bid to chase down the FedEx Cup millions.

Twoball punters can consider backing Corey Conners to beat Bryson DeChambeau. The Canadian ace is a superb tee-to-green operator while his player partner may be distracted by his current slow-play storm and the underdog is worth siding with.

Danny Willett, meanwhile, was electric from tee to green on Saturday and should account for Varner, who is sure to be nervous in the heat of a Sunday finish.
