Jon Rahm to win the Scottish Open
4pts 7-4 general

Story so far

Thomas Detry and Matthew Fitzpatrick share the lead going into the final round of the Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club, North Berwick, having reached 14 under par through 54 holes.

European Tour maiden Detry and six-time champion Fitzpatrick are a shot ahead of pre-tournament 15-2 favourite Jon Rahm, with last week's Irish Open champion Lucas Herbert alone in fourth.

Detry was available at 110-1 ante-post, while Fitzpatrick could be backed at 30-1. Detry is the only one of the top four on the leaderboard who has not yet booked a spot in next week's Open Championship.

The final Renaissance twoball of Detry and Fitzpatrick is scheduled to tee off at 1.06pm on Sunday. A calm day is forecast, with the potential for some short burst of light rain, and a small threat of thunder.

Final-round preview

Jon Rahm has had a putter wrapped in ice for rounds one and three, yet is still only a shot behind going into the final 18 holes, and that spells trouble for the rest of the Scottish Open field.

Lack of course experience and potential rustiness in his break since the US Open were the only negatives that could be thrown at Rahm ante-post, but with three rounds under his belt, it is reasonable to expect a strong finish from the Spanish beefcake.

He got detached after a slow start to Saturday, but regained market leadership with five birdies in the middle of his round.

It is a surprise to find such healthy prices about Rahm, who had a six-shot Memorial lead prior to a positive Covid test, then won the US Open in gutsy fashion last time out.

Thomas Detry was enjoying himself with the Scottish galleries in round three, but the Belgian has tightened up badly under Sunday pressure in the past. Matthew Fitzpatrick is the biggest threat to Rahm backers, but the Englishman is winless this year and more likely to be outgunned by the world number one than repel him.

Lucas Herbert is enjoying a purple patch, but a penultimate twoball alongside Rahm in a Rolex Series event is a significant test of character.
