Story so far

Tony Finau is odds-on for back-to-back PGA Tour victories after a third-round 65 gave him a share of the Rocket Mortgage Classic lead.

Finau, who romped to a three-shot success in the 3M Open last Sunday, has reached 21 under par through 54 holes at Detroit Golf Club. The 72-hole scoring record at this venue is 25 under par, so that should come under great threat on a sunny, calm final day.

The pre-tournament 16-1 chance is a best-price 4-5 to convert this position into the fourth PGA Tour triumph of his career. Taylor Pendrith, a 31-year-old rookie maiden, is alongside Finau at the leaderboard summit.

There is a four-shot gap to the man in third place - Cameron Young - while FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay is a further two shots off the pace.

Leaderboard
-21 Taylor Pendrith, Tony Finau
-17 Cameron Young
-16 Stephan Jaeger
-15 Patrick Cantlay

4-5 T Finau, 13-8 T Pendrith, 11 C Young, 40 P Cantlay, 70 S Jaeger, 200 bar

Final-round preview

Scottie Scheffler won twice in two starts in the WGC-Match Play and the Masters in the spring, while Xander Schauffele did likewise in the Travelers Championship and the Scottish Open a few weeks ago. Now it seems the time has come for another member of America's Ryder Cup team to deliver back-to-back silverware.

Tony Finau was in awesome ball-striking form in the 3M Open last week and that long-game solidity has carried from Minnesota to Michigan. He hit 18 greens in regulation in round one of the Rocket Mortgage and has hit 50 from 54 this week. The giant Utah man is churning out fairways and greens, but this week he is actually holing putts, too.

Finau lies seventh in the Rocket Mortgage putting stats and the 4-5 against his name in the outright betting seems more than fair. Winning a playoff against Cameron Smith in The Northern Trust last summer - a FedEx Cup playoffs event - did wonders for Finau's confidence. There is a lack of fear about Finau these days and he seems by far the most likely champion.

Taylor Pendrith has never even won on the Korn Ferry Tour. The rookie maiden is blessed with great length and plenty of talent, but getting over the line in front has proved beyond him. When he took a three-shot lead into the final round of the Bermuda Championship last October, his Sunday 76 was painful viewing.

Pendrith played well yesterday, but Sunday tension may mean a different performance for the denouement. Finau can be fancied to assert his authority in the final twoball and his main concern may come from Cameron Young.

The Open Championship runner-up will still feel well in the hunt from four shots behind. Young, a two-time winner on the Korn Ferry Tour, may end up as Rocket Mortgage runner-up. Getting past Finau, though, will probably require some serious fireworks.

Today's staking plan is influenced by yesterday's. The Saturday-morning attack was to get with Finau in the outright market at 13-8, as well as in a double with Patrick Reed for LIV Golf Bedminster. Finau remains the man to beat in Detroit, but Reed has got work to do in Bedminster. The double is still on, but a second double today - pairing Finau with Dustin Johnson - seems sensible.

Henrik Stenson is setting the pace in LIV Golf Bedminster, but the Swede seems vulnerable. He was poor when in contention for the Scandinavian Mixed last month and is winless since the 2019 Hero World Challenge. Johnson (three shots behind) or Reed (four) seem set to pile pressure on the LIV Golf newcomer.

Rocket Mortgage final-round twoball punters are advised to take the same path as yesterday. The Finau-Young double obliged in round three and can do so again - Finau against Pendrith at 7pm and Young against Stephan Jaeger at 6.50pm.
