Ryan Fox fired a first-round 63 to set the pace in the Ras al Khaimah Classic at Al Hamra Golf Club - and the New Zealander has an early Friday tee-time with which to forge further forward.

Fox, who missed the cut by a shot in the Ras al Khaimah Championship last week, was a pre-tournament 60-1 chance. He ended the day with a two-shot lead and as 5-1 favourite.

Nicolai Hojgaard and Jordan Smith, first and second in the outright betting ante-post, have some catching up to do over the final three days. Hojgaard is eight shots behind Fox, while Smith is nine. Ricardo Gouveia is alone in second place.

Al Hamra is a course which suits strong drivers - power is a huge asset on the four par-fives and the three reachable par-fours - and second-round threeball punters are pointed towards Laurie Canter (8.20am UK and Ireland time) and Callum Shinkwin (8.10am).

Canter and Shinkwin are full of driving ability. Canter can defeat Alexander Bjork and Jeff Winther, while Shinkwin can boss John Catlin and Ricardo Santos.
