Daniel Gavins set the early pace in the Kenya Open, firing a seven-under-par 64, and the Englishman shortened from 80-1 to 10-1 during day one.

Gavins, who made his European Tour breakthrough last summer in the ISPS Handa World Invitational, holed an enormous birdie putt on his final hole to hit the top of the leaderboard at Muthaiga Golf Club, Nairobi.

American raider, Johannes Veerman, claimed 7-1 favouritism after his morning 65. The Czech Masters champion was a 22-1 chance ante-post. Shubhankar Sharma matched that score in the afternoon.

Second-round threeball punters are pointed towards Dean Burmester, who looks a solid option against Guido Migliozzi and Adri Arnaus. Migliozzi, who has been wearing glasses this season for the first time, has been in ragged form. An opening 76 at Muthaiga means a missed cut is on the cards this week.

Arnaus, suffering with a wrist injury over Christmas, missed the cut in his only previous Muthaiga start - on the Challenge Tour in 2018. A 69 was a decent enough start in round one this time, but Burmester went bogey-free - the South African comfortable in the conditions - and he should probably be shorter than 5-4 to repeat his Thursday success.

A hot, sunny, windy afternoon is forecast for Nairobi. Burmester can be fancied to hold his scorecard together better than Migliozzi and Arnaus.
