Rory McIlroy shortened from 6-1 to 6-4 after the first round of the DP World Tour Championship at the Earth Course, Dubai, having carded a seven-under-par 65.

The former world number one ended the day two shots clear of the field, with last week's Dubai Championship victor JB Hansen among those tied for second place.

The 53 competitors go out in leaderboard order for round two, so McIlroy will be in the final twoball at 8.45am UK and Ireland time, with Tapio Pulkkanen for company.

Race to Dubai leader Collin Morikawa improved his chances of RTD success by firing a 68. The Open champion's nearest pursuer in the RTD standings - Billy Horschel - slumped to a 74.

Second-round twoball punters are pointed towards Guido Migliozzi, who seems a value outsider against Richard Bland in the 5.05am (UK and Ireland time) contest.

Migliozzi possesses the power to handle the Earth Course - a 7,675-yard beast which becomes a slog for short drivers - and the Italian finished 16th in his only previous appearance. Bland is suffering with a knee injury that he will be having surgery on after this event.

A treble is also advised. Sean Crocker (7.35am against John Catlin), Sam Horsfield (8.25am against Alexander Bjork) and McIlroy (8.45am against Pulkkanen) appear strong favourites, which pay almost 9-2 when put together.
