Thomas Detry to win 2.25pm threeball

Preview

Ante-post Cazoo Open favourite, Jordan Smith, got off to a poor start at Celtic Manor and could be backed at 80-1 as he trudged to the clubhouse following a first-round 74.

The pre-tournament 14-1 chance carded double-bogey at the 17th hole on his way to a three-over-par effort which leaves the Bath man much catching up to do in round two. Smith tees off at 2.35pm, alongside Johannes Veerman and Jamie Donaldson, with a moderate afternoon breeze set to add to the challenge.

Pick of the afternoon threeball card is arguably Thomas Detry, who can defeat Oliver Bekker and Grant Forrest in the 2.25pm contest.

Detry finished runner-up in his only previous start at this week's venue and the Belgian will expect to improve on his opening round of 72. Even that mediocre effort was enough to outscore Bekker (74) and Forrest (73), and a repeat victory seems a fair price at 5-4.

Detry has been in solid form on the DP World Tour in recent weeks, while Bekker has had to deal with being dropped from the LIV Golf circuit. The South African finished sixth in the opening LIV event, but was not invited to be part of the 48 for the subsequent tournaments in America, and he has missed four of his last six DP World Tour cuts.
