Preview
Pre-tournament 200-1 chance Kiradech Aphibarnrat fired an eight-under-par morning 64 in the first round of the BMW PGA Championship to set the early pace at Wentworth.
The Thai carded seven birdies and two pars on a sensational back nine, despite starting the event ranked 516th in the world. He regained his PGA Tour card in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals last week and has carried the positive vibes to Surrey.
Rarely will there ever be such a huge disparity in the scoring of a threeball than in that of the Aphibarnrat group at Wentworth. Alongside the buzzing 32-year-old was Ross Fisher, who posted a 71, and a badly struggling Gavin Green (78).
Friday could be when Fisher takes over as the star of the group. Aphibarnrat, an inconsistent performer, seems likely to find life much tougher in the afternoon drizzle and backing up a super-low round is notoriously difficult.
Fisher grew up as a Wentworth member and is ultra-comfortable at the venue. He was runner-up to Paul Casey in the 2009 BMW PGA, losing by a shot. In 2019, he made headlines at the track again with a remarkable albatross at the 18th hole in round three.
Green, who has suffered with injury issues over the last year, has lost control of his driving and looks set to slip outside of the world's top 400. Fisher looks good value to boss his Asian playing partners in round two (11.20am).
Martin Kaymer also appeals for his second-round threeball (12.30pm). The German finished round one strongly, with a bogey-free back-nine. Victor Perez followed a ragged Sunday 74 in the Italian Open with an opening 76 at Wentworth, while Francesco Molinari has been playing through back problems and is difficult to trust despite a bright start.
