Story so far

Bad weather has impacted the Barbasol Championship, with greenkeepers battling to revive a waterlogged course, and there is still a long way to go in the Kentucky event.

The leaders have completed only three holes of round three. Play is set to resume at 7.45am local time (12.45pm UK and Ireland), with the final round following. If all goes to plan, the leaders will tee off in round four at 12.10pm local time (5.10pm UK and Ireland).

Max McGreevy, a pre-tournament 250-1 chance, is one shot ahead. Matti Schmid and Adam Svensson are tied for second place.

Final-round preview

Racing Post Sport pre-tournament recommendation, Matti Schmid, is well in the hunt for Barbasol Championship glory. The German, recommended at 90-1 on Tuesday morning, is one shot off the pace and playing superbly.

A sunny day, with light to moderate breezes is forecast, so Schmid should get a full 72 holes with which to work. He will return to the Keene Trace track facing a tough up-and-down for par at the fourth, so there is a good chance the 24-year-old will fall two shots behind.

With four par-fives still to play in round three, though, and then another 18 holes, there will be plenty of time to make up the ground.
Schmid is a powerhouse who can be deadly with his approach shots.

Despite missing birdie putts from four feet and six feet in round two, he still carded a 63 which propelled him to the leaderboard summit, before having a long wait for round three.

Max McGreevy is in the fairway with his drive at the fourth, but the world number 290 should tighten up as the event progresses. He has missed 12 of his last 16 cuts.

Schmid fans probably have more to worry about from Adam Svensson, who has also got his drive away nicely at the fourth. The Canadian is a three-time Korn Ferry Tour champion.

Schmid, a two-time European Amateur champion who starred at college in Kentucky, could be set for a thrilling duel with Svensson. Punters with a decent bet on Schmid at massive prices may choose to have some cover on Svensson at 3-1.

Anyone yet to get involved might fancy an all-German double - adding the Senior Players Championship to the Barbasol. Schmid is fancied to show in Kentucky why he entered pro ranks with such a big reputation, while his compatriot Alex Cejka should arguably be favourite among the seniors at Firestone.

Cejka closed round three by covering his final five holes in four under par, grabbing a share of the lead. The 51-year-old is competing in only his eighth senior Major and has already won two of them.
