Story so far

Sam Burns won his maiden PGA Tour title in his last tournament - the Valspar Championship - and the confident Louisiana man is strongly threatening an immediate follow-up in the AT&T Byron Nelson.

Burns leads by two shots at TPC Craig Ranch, Texas, firing a second-round 62 to reach 17 under par at the halfway stage. The ante-post 33-1 chance is 13-8 favourite with two rounds to go and is also being backed at 66-1 for next week's US PGA Championship.

Pre-tournament market leaders, Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau, are tied for 40th place, ten shots off the pace.

Third-round preview

Bryson DeChambeau was five under par for his front nine in round three and appeared to be laying down a serious challenge to playing partner Sam Burns, but DeChambeau was over par on the back-nine and a horrific 5-4-5 finish has left him with no margin for error over the weekend.

DeChambeau requires unrelenting brilliance to win the AT&T Byron Nelson from here, while Burns has broken the back of his Craig Ranch mission and will expect to set up a winning chance for Sunday.

Punters who stuck with the Valspar king and invested at 33-1 for the Byron Nelson should be on fantastic terms with themselves. Anyone staring at the remaining 13-8 can probably shrug their shoulders and save their ammunition for the US PGA Championship.

That is especially the case when you factor in the weather forecast. The hot scoring of the first two rounds is set to disappear, with strong winds expected over the weekend. In-running punters keen to get involved may be better served having small wagers on players who are capable of excelling in windy conditions.

Alex Noren fits that category, while Doc Redman and Jordan Spieth would be the other two on the board to attract interest. Marc Leishman, from eight shots behind and available at 50-1 with each-way terms of a fifth the odds the first five, may be the best option of all. Leishman relishes a breeze, has a great record in this event, and has found form.

Burns and Noren are scheduled off at 7pm UK and Ireland time in the final twoball. Ryan Palmer, a Texan who knows this course well and holds the course record (61), looks a strong twoball option against Russell Knox (4.15pm).
