Scottie Scheffler is as short as 28-1 in places for the Masters after making his PGA Tour breakthrough in the Phoenix Open on Sunday.

Scheffler, still available at 40-1 for the first Major of the season, defeated Patrick Cantlay at the third extra hole of a Phoenix playoff with a birdie which sent the TPC Scottsdale hordes into raptures.

Scheffler, who thrashed world number one Jon Rahm in his Ryder Cup debut last year, has moved up to ninth in the world rankings.

Scheffler's caddie, Ted Scott, was bagman for Bubba Watson when he won both his Masters titles. The Scheffler-Scott combination could be deadly at Augusta, where the Texas-based swinger has finished 19th and 18th the last two years.

Cantlay is among the runners for the Genesis Invitational, which has become the only main-tour event of this week after the postponement of the Indian Open.

Cantlay will be joined at Riviera Country Club by 25-1 Phoenix winner Scheffler, Sam Burns, Paul Casey, Tony Finau, Viktor Hovland, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Hideki Matsuyama, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. The mouthwatering California gathering starts on Thursday.
