Kevin Kisner made a solid start to his quest for the Rocket Mortgage Classic with an opening 66 and he looks a decent bet to see off Rickie Fowler and Charles Howell in their 6.05pm BST threeball in Detroit.

Fowler finished two shots behind his fellow American - Nate Lashley took the first-rounder leader honours with a nine-under-par 63 - but the pint-sized Californian's score was aided by a 122-yard hole out for eagle on the 17th hole.

Otherwise, the Phoenix Open champion was unspectacular, finding just half the fairways on the course, and he will have to improve on a tight track if he is to force his way into contention.

It is seven weeks since his last decent finish - he was fourth at the Wells Fargo Championship and there may not be huge scope for improvement from a player who is ranked 108th in driving accuracy.

Howell was the best performer among the trio on Thursday - he is two shots off Lashley's frantic early pace - but there is little in his recent form to suggest he will be able to stay with the pace.

Howell has not had a top-ten finish in 11 tournaments since his sixth at the Genesis Open in February and his 65 was only the second occasion in his last 17 rounds that he has broken 70.

Kisner, meanwhile, looks to have built on an encouraging 15th at last week's Travelers Championship.

He hit 71.4 per cent of fairways at the North Course, which is being used as a PGA Tour venue for the first time this week, and found 13 of the 18 greens in regulation.

Kisner's putting also seems to be in warm order as he gained more than 2.5 shots on the field on the greens.
