Tournament preview

The breakaway LIV Tour heads to Saudi Arabia for the penultimate round of its eight-tournament season, but punters should be less in the dark that they were for last week's heat in Bangkok.

The new test at Stonehill Golf Club threw up a surprise result when Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra picked up the life-changing winning cheque, but many of the 48-man field will be familiar with this week's test as Royal Greens has hosted the last four Saudi Internationals.

And that means we should expect another strong show from LIV Golf's outstanding performer.

Wilkerson's top tip

Dustin Johnson 11-2

Former Masters champion Dustin Johnson has already claimed the individual season first prize of $18m as no one can catch him under the LIV points system, and that glory has come before he tees up at one of his favourite tracks.

The former world number one has twice won the Saudi International at Royal Greens and holds the course record of 61 from his first triumph in 2019.

He also finished second to Graeme McDowell the following year and was eighth when the tournament was played as part of the Asian Tour schedule in February, when Harold Varner won.

Johnson was tied for 15th in Thailand last week, but his lowest finish in the five tournaments before that was in the first competition in London when he finished eighth.

He was also able to triumph in Boston so there is a great chance he will be able to boost his coffers with another excellent performance in Saudi before the season closes in Miami at the end of the month.

Next best bet

Sergio Garcia 25-1

Another former Augusta winner Sergio Garcia could give Johnson his biggest concern, even though the Spaniard's 21st in Bangkok was underwhelming.

Garcia had an eventful debut at the Saudi International in 2019 when he was disqualified for damaging the greens in frustration, but his subsequent performances at Royal Greens made up for it.

He was sixth in 2020 and 12th in 2021 and will be hoping to produce his earlier LIV form which saw him finish fourth in Chicago, ninth in Boston and seventh in Bedminster.

Other selection

Paul Casey 20-1

Paul Casey initially resisted the urge to play at the Saudi International but after a change of heart, he finished 12th in 2021 and then 24th in February, when his effort included a third-round 64.

He was sixth at Bedminster and, after a couple of indifferent performances, bounced back well with third spot in Bangkok last week, so the Englishman is capable of making the frame.

Course overview The course was opened shortly before it hosted its first DP World Tour event in 2019 and the Saudi International has been played here four times, although it was an Asian Tour event last time.

The big names at the top of the market should find this a straightforward assignment unless the wind picks up off the Red Sea.

There are just two par-fives - the fourth and the 18th - and while the fairways are undulating, the greens are pretty flat.

Weather forecast It looks set to be a blistering weekend, with temperatures around 35C throughout and little respite being provided by sea breezes, which are likely to be modest.

Type of player suited to the challenge The layout should play into the hands of the big hitters and, with low-scoring likely, a red-hot putter could be a vital tool in any player's bag.

Key stat Just two of Dustin Johnson's 16 rounds at Royal Greens have been completed in more than 68 shots
