Course overview

East Lake is the curtain-closer to the PGA Tour season, with the most successful performers of the year ending their Stateside campaign in the Tour Championship. 

East Lake has hosted this event in 1998, 2000, 2002 and from 2004 onwards. The famous course was designed by Tom Bendelow and Donald Ross, but Rees Jones took charge of a redesign in 1994 and at the end of 2007 (he switched all greens from bentgrass to Bermuda), and an even more extensive redesign took place before last year's Tour Championship, with bunkers relocated and reshaped, trees removed, mounds added, and all 18 greens revised, with many much larger and more undulating than before. Andrew Green took charge of that project.

The par changed from 70 to 71 for 2024, with the 14th playing as a par five, but that has been made a par four for this edition, meaning the overall par is back to 70. 

A SubAir drainage system means firm, fast greens are almost certain. A handicap system was in place from 2019 through 2024, meaning the FedEx Cup leader started with a two-shot Tour Championship lead, and some players started ten shots behind, but that has been scrapped this year, so everyone starts on the same score

What will it take to win the Tour Championship?

Finding fairways has traditionally been extremely difficult at East Lake. The course was dramatically redesigned prior to last year's event, so previous course form counts for less, but strong ball-striking remains the key to success

Scottie Scheffler built on his handicap start to win the FedEx Cup for the first time. Collin Morikawa carded the lowest 72-hole score, but finished four shots behind Scheffler due to the handicap system.
