Steve Palmer's Myrtle Beach Classic preview
Mackenzie Hughes is favourite for the Myrtle Beach Classic, which highlights the wide-open nature of this low-grade PGA Tour event. The Canadian is a 34-year-old with only two Tour titles to his name – the 2016 RSM Classic and the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship – and this weak ball-striker is easy to resist at short prices.
Steve Palmer's top tip
Chris Gotterup 35-1
The only course winner in this week's field can retain his title. Chris Gotterup obliterated the Myrtle Beach Classic field by six shots last year and the Dunes Club sets up well for this gung-ho powerhouse.
Rounds of 66, 64, 65, 67 meant a PGA Tour breakthrough for Gotterup at the age of 24 and in the last couple of months he has been hinting at a return to that sort of form. He was 16th in the Puerto Rico Open, 18th in the Houston Open, 18th again in the Corales Puntacana Championship, then 12th alongside a weak partner (Quade Cummins) in the Zurich Classic pairs event.
Gotterup warmed up for his title defence with 15th place in the CJ Cup Byron Nelson despite carrying a cold putter all week. He closed with a 64, driving his ball in spectacular fashion, and will be relishing another 'bombs away' assignment this week.
Next best bet
Kevin Yu 33-1
Prior to last season's Myrtle Beach Classic, Kevin Yu had missed four of his last five cuts, but he fell in love with The Dunes and carded rounds of 67, 69, 66, 67 for fourth place. He became a PGA Tour champion five months later in the Sanderson Farms Championship.
Since winning, Yu has posted six top-20s, establishing himself as one of the best ball-strikers on the circuit. He closed with a 66 for 29th spot in the Byron Nelson on Sunday, hitting his ball with trademark authority. Any short-game improvement this week makes Yu one of the most likely winners.
Other selections
Davis Riley 60-1
Pierceson Coody 50-1 (NON-RUNNER)
Adrien Dumont de Chassart 100-1
A two-shot penalty midway through round two was a hammerblow for Davis Riley in the Byron Nelson last week. He accidentally used a banned function on his rangefinder, confessed to a rules official, and plummeted down the leaderboard. Riley did well to finish 45th in the circumstances, building on some great recent golf, which included 21st spot on his Masters debut.
Riley finished 66th at The Dunes last year, but had arrived in terrible form. He is in much better nick this time – and the same can be said of Pierceson Coody, who was 54th in the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic. Weekend rounds of 66, 67 meant 25th place for Coody in the Byron Nelson.
Coody, a three-time Korn Ferry Tour champion, has looked good on that circuit this year. He lost a playoff for the ISCO Championship on the PGA Tour last year and can go close in a similar event this week.
Another maiden to follow at a healthy price is Adrien Dumont de Chassart, a talented Belgian who finished first and second in his first two Korn Ferry Tour events. His PGA Tour rookie campaign last season did not go to plan, but the last six months have been encouraging, including third spot in the Bermuda Championship in November and eighth in the Qatar Masters. He was 40th at The Dunes last year and can do better this time after warming up with 18th spot on the KFT last week.
